Can My Back Pain Be from My Feet?

Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints among Australians. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 1 in 6 Australians (16%) reported back problems in a single year, with many seeking relief through GP’s, Physios, or Chiropractors. But what if your feet, the very foundation of your body, are actually at the root of your discomfort?

At the Podiatric Health Centre, we see many patients who are surprised to learn how closely linked their back pain and foot health really are.

How Can My Feet Affect My Back?

Your feet are your body’s shock absorbers. Every step you take sends force through your ankles, knees, hips, and spine. When there is an imbalance or abnormality in your feet, it can create a ripple effect through your entire musculoskeletal system.

Common foot-related causes of back pain include:

  • Flat Feet (Pes Planus): When the arches of the feet collapse, the ankles roll inward (overpronation), causing the knees and hips to misalign and increasing strain on the lower back.
  • High Arches (Pes Cavus): High arches can reduce shock absorption, putting stress on the spine and contributing to back pain during high-impact activities like walking or running.
  • Uneven Leg Length or Gait Abnormalities: If one leg functions differently or is slightly shorter, the body compensates with posture changes that can lead to chronic back discomfort.
  • Poor Footwear: Shoes without proper arch support or cushioning can throw off your biomechanics, especially during long periods of standing or walking.

How Do I Know If My Feet Are the Problem?

Signs that your foot posture might be contributing to your back pain include:

  • Pain that worsens after standing or walking
  • Uneven wear patterns on your shoes
  • Recurring pain in the feet, ankles, or knees
  • A feeling of imbalance or poor posture

Many people overlook their feet as a potential contributor to back pain. But a biomechanical assessment by a qualified Podiatrist can often identify the link and offer solutions.

If you’ve been living with persistent back discomfort and traditional treatments haven’t worked, it may be time to look at your feet.
